Federated’s Agronomy Team Keeps Growing
As the face of agriculture continually changes, so do some of the faces at Federated Co-ops. Adam Jahnz is the newest addition to the agronomy team; he joined the Co-op in April of this year as an agronomy sales rep.
Jahnz grew up in Pine City and currently commutes from Hinckley to his post at Federated’s Rush City location. As a local kid who grew up on an 80-acre corn and soybean hobby farm, it wasn’t a big leap to work with area growers after earning a biology degree from UW-Superior.
“I’ve always had an interest in agronomy,” said Jahnz, “and now it’s fun to make a career out of it.”
Like that of most Federated agronomy reps, his work runs the gamut from seed to fertilizer to chemistry. But what Jahnz enjoys most is “going out and meeting with farmers, and figuring out what their wants and needs are,” he said. As a newcomer to the team, he said it’s been “good to see how everyone does things” – both the growers and the agronomists.
With an April start date, Jahnz joined Federated at the busiest time of year. “Being thrown into the mix this spring – always a busy time – meant I was getting my hands dirty and seeing how things work . . . right off the bat,” he said, adding, “I enjoyed the hard work.”
It’s been a tough growing season for local farmers, and Jahnz said that reality challenged him to find the best ways to help growers. He’s been intent on finding solutions, providing education, and offering new information that can give growers “something to take away” from every interaction.
“If I can help [growers], it’s a huge thing for me. I’m just trying to be out there and help,” he said.
Jahnz likes the variety his job offers – from looking at crops to talking to farmers to working in the office and covering retail needs, or even mixing fertilizer! “I enjoy the fact that it’s not the same every day. You never know what comes next,” he said.
With seven months under his agronomy belt, Jahnz is excited for Federated’s future – and he’s pretty excited about his own future that includes getting married in January 2020.
